HDTV: Cable v. Satellite

With the popularity of DirecTV's exclusive NFL Sunday Ticket package, Premier Communications is accustomed to being busy around the start of football season.

Premier, which handles installations for the satellite provider, typically hooks up customers within two to three days of receiving orders from DirecTV, with a slightly longer time frame around the start of football, said Dan Doyle, lead technician for Premier's Madison office.

"Now we're 12, 13 days out," Doyle said last month while installing DirecTV at my home. "We could be working 24/7."

The reason, he said, is the Big Ten Network, which is available on DirecTV but not Charter Communications, prompting many Badger fans to switch providers. (The companies don't release detailed subscriber numbers.)
