For the Record: Papa Do Preach!
By Tara Sullivan -- The Record, 07/20/2008
For every painful minute of play-by-play the NFL subjected us to these last two seasons, we are about to be rewarded.
After two ear-scratching seasons of listening to Bryant Gumbel as the voice on the league's eponymous network, the ill-fated experiment is mercifully over. And with the recent announcement that Bob Papa has been hired to replace Gumbel in the booth, pairing with Cris Collinsworth for the series of Thursday night games, we can only cheer about how the NFL got this one exactly right.
Papa is a familiar voice to area football fans, having been the radio voice of the Giants since 1995. Prior to that, he hosted the pregame and postgame shows beginning in 1988. His work is consistently excellent, as he deftly handles a crowded three-man booth. Papa's strong play-by-play skills are balanced with wit and humor. He is not subject to crazy hyperbole, he doesn't scream at listeners and he is appropriately excited or critical of the team when warranted.
