FCC Should Order Comcast to Carry NFL Network
Communications Daily, 7/11/2008
Washington D.C – The FCC quickly should order Comcast to begin carrying the NFL Network on the same service level as it distributes Comcast-owned sports networks such as Versus and Golf Channel, the NFL Network said late Thursday. The league was replying to Comcast's comments in the two companies' carriage dispute.
"Comcast's differential carriage of the NFL Network and its own sports channels requires a determination of discrimination as a matter of law because Comcast does not offer a sufficient business purpose... for its admittedly discriminatory conduct," NFL Network said. The NFLN said it garners higher ratings than Comcast's networks. "Comcast makes the NFL network available to all of our customers on a tier of service that the NFL agreed to and negotiated by contract," a Comcast spokeswoman said. "The NFL has received precisely what it bargained for and needs no government assistance."
